About the Author

For more than three decades, I have worked as a biomedical researcher—teaching, training and mentoring Honours, Master’s and PhD students, and publishing more than 50 research articles. I created BiologyWithin.com to share scientific knowledge with the public in plain language.

For over a decade, I considered whether to continue writing only for scientific audiences or also to explain science directly to the public. I decided on both. While the scientific articles were published, the hundreds of articles written over a decade for the public remained hidden. Finally, I am now systematically updating, refining, and giving a permanent home to these articles on BiologyWithin.com.

BiologyWithin.com is not a clinical blog or a source of medical advice. It is a place where I share the scientific knowledge and experience I have gained throughout my career—without making it sound like a scientific paper.

What Happens When Cells and Tissues Are Damaged?

When cells and tissues get injured, the human body immediately works to stop the harm and restore balance. Mildly injured cells can often heal and return to normal, while severely injured cells die. The immune system then clears away the dead debris and begins tissue repair. Depending on the type and extent of the damage, the tissue will either regenerate completely, form a scar, or gradually lose some of its normal function.
